The 18th-century Anglican clergyman John Newton lived an extraordinary and contradictory life; he participated in the slave trade after briefly being enslaved himself in Africa, then became an ardent abolitionist later in life. His most famous hymn, “Amazing Grace,” was written after a couple of spiritual conversions (both occurring after near-death experiences) and after his ordination to the priesthood.
