American Idiot the musical is a one-act stage musical adaption of rock band Green Day’s album of the same name. The soundtrack has additional Green Day songs from other albums, including 21st Century Breakdown. The libretto was written by Billie Joe Armstrong and Michael Mayer. The lyrics are by Armstrong and the band. Tom Kitt is the music supervisor and orchestrator of the show. Green Day does not appear in the production, but the show has an onstage band. The cast includes, John Gallagher Jr. as Johnny, Michael Esper as Will, Stark Sands as Tunny, Ton Vincent as St. Jimmy, Rebecca Naomi Jones as Whatsername, Mary Faber as Heather, and Christina Sajous as the Extraordinary Girl. The American Idiot album was released in September of 2004. In 2005 Green Day received a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album of the Year. It was a 5x Platinum selling album. The album received the Rolling Stone Readers Choice for #1 of the top 100 Greatest Albums of the decade.
