An organist and teacher of such luminaries as William Byrd, the English composer Thomas Tallis was an important Renaissance musician and a prominent Catholic during a period of religious turmoil. Along with Byrd, he was granted a monopoly for polyphonic music in 1575, giving him exclusive access to the paper used to print music.
